Many UXers somehow face the same situation where they have to explain what they do in their routine job. My understanding is that the role of a UX person varies alot and it depends upon the company you are working. In my personal view, UXer still need to make himself/herself expert in one particular line ( Designing/Flow/ personas/ Testing/ Moderating/Training/evaluation etc..…..)

In the end it all depends where you want to see yourself in 5 years. A management position, a role in design creating or training. It is matter of choosing one a sticking to it for some time.
